SCHOLARSHIPS
APPLICATION INFORMATION
We are honored to offer the following thirteen scholarships
funded through the Homer Area Community Foundation. Please complete the application and attach
the
applicable essay (s).
The George and Betty Petredean Scholarship (est.
1994)
George and
Betty Petredean feel very fortunate that they had caring adults who
encouraged and assisted them in pursuing a college education.
They have
established
the George and Betty Petredean Scholarship Fund for
graduates of Homer High School. Each year, two graduates are awarded a
scholarship, which is renewable for
three years. They are very
appreciative of what they have had and enjoy sharing their good fortune. I
hope later in life the scholarship recipients will be able to do the
same.
This
scholarship is $2,000 yearly,
which is renewable for a
total of $8,000 upon meeting certain requirements for three years. Recipients
of this scholarship should exhibit
strong academic performance,
leadership skills, and community involvement. Extra
consideration is given to family members or descendents of present or past employees
of Calhoun Foundry and Trojan
Heat Treat.
Please
write a short essay explaining why you should be considered for this
scholarship. Please explain why you feel it is important to pursue a
college
education and who, if anyone, has influenced you in this
decision.
The Betty Petredean Scholarship for the Arts (est. 2005)
Margaret "Betty"
Petredean was a music education major, pianist, organist, vocalist and a
lover of the fine arts. The scholarship
established in memory of Betty Petredean.
One yearly scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded and will be renewable
for an additional three years, based on specific criteria. Homer
High School graduating
seniors or alumni who are pursuing a degree in arts will be considered
for this scholarship. Citizenship, leadership skills, community
service, and the scholarship essay
will also be taken into consideration.
Please write a short essay (no more than one page) explaining why the
arts are important in today's world.
The Harry and Linda Lucyshyn Memorial Scholarship (est.
1997)
Harry
Lucyshyn and Linda Hyde Lucyshyn were graduates of Homer High School.
They both attended Michigan State University. Linda majored in speech
and
audiology and Harry majored in Veterinary Medicine.
Harry and Linda
married and returned to Homer where they worked and were active in the
community.
They had one son, Greg Lucyshyn, who also graduated from
Homer High School. Harry died in 1981 and Linda died in 1983.
This
scholarship has been established
in their memory.
One yearly
scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a Homer Community School
graduate. Consideration is given to those students who may be pursuing
careers in
audiology, sciences, agriculture and veterinary medicine.
Please
write a short essay explaining why you should be considered for this
scholarship. Please explain what area of study you are pursuing and
why.
Bessie L. Smith Scholarship Fund (est.
2000)
Bessie L.
Smith was born in 1904. She lived her entire life of 95 years in the
Homer area. She graduated from Homer High School in 1922. She attended
Teachers
College, (now known as Western Michigan University), and received a teaching certificate. She taught and substituted for many
years in the Homer area.
Bessie
married William Smith and raised five
children, all of whom graduated from Homer High School. She continued
to substitute teach while raising her family and was
involved with young
people in the community. Her dedication and commitment to the Homer
community was an important part of her life.
One yearly
scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a Homer High School graduate
based on scholarship, merit and community participation.
Please
write a short essay explaining why you should be considered for this
scholarship. Explain why you feel it is important to be involved in
giving
back to your community.
Phil Duff Memorial Scholarship Fund (est. 2001)
This fund was established in memory of Phil Duff, former Homer
elementary school principal and active community member.
One yearly scholarship of $250 will be awarded to a Homer High
School graduate based on scholarship, merit, and community
participation.
Please write a short essay about your post high school plans and if
anyone throughout your life helped to influence your decision.
Robert and Doris Folk Scholarship
(est. 1999)
Bob and
Doris Folk were life long residents of Homer. Bob entered World
War II as a flyer and was shot down while on a mission over Belgium.
He
was captured and spent 1-1/2 years as a prisoner of war. After his liberation Bob came back to work for his father in the oil business and
founded what is
now the Folk Oil Company. Bob and Doris raised two
children who both graduated from Homer High School.
Bob passed
away in 1999 and Doris in 2005. The Folk Family Fund was established
in their memory. Both Bob and
Doris
have given back to the community in
many ways
over the years. Establishing this scholarship is a way to make sure their efforts
continue. They both realized the
importance of furthering ones
education
beyond high school.
This
scholarship is $2,000 yearly and is renewable for three years upon
meeting certain requirements to a Homer High School graduate that plans
on attending a four-year Michigan
Public State University. Recipients of this scholarship should
demonstrate financial need, leadership skills, community involvement,
and academic performance. Applicants
cannot be a relative of the Folk
Family.

education beyond high school and why this scholarship is important
to you.
SLF/Blair Scholarship (est. 2001)
This
scholarship combines the funds of the Homer Student Loan Fund (SLF)
and the Blair Scholarship Fund. Homer’s superintendent, Everett
Highland, started the
Student Loan Fund in 1959, to provide loans to
Homer High School graduates to help them further their education. The
Blair Scholarship was started in 1977 with funds
from the estate of Bess
Blair as donated by her sister Maude. Both sisters were born in Homer
and were descendents of Homer’s first doctor. Bess taught in the
Homer
school system. Maude was a life-long educator, and both sisters were
strong supporters of education.
This scholarship is $840 yearly and is potentially renewable upon meeting certain requirements for three years. Recipients
of this scholarship should be
a Homer High School graduate with a commitment to successfully furthering their
education
beyond high school. They should exhibit solid character, a
commitment to community
service and philanthropy, and financial need.
For this
scholarship please write a short essay explaining why you should be
considered for this scholarship. Include your ideas about the
importance
of philanthropy.
FFA Alumni Scholarship Fund
(est. 2002)
Applicants should be
graduates of Homer High School and participants in the Homer FFA for one
or more of their high school years. Students planning to pursue
an
education in agricultural science will be given a preference.
The amount and number of awards will be determined annually. Students
may reapply for renewal.
Please write a short essay about why you chose your career plan and how
FFA influenced your choice.
Crandall Family Scholarship (est. 2006)
The Crandall Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2006.
This scholarship fund has been established by Larry Crandall in memory
of his wife,
Mary Dibble-Crandall, and his parents, Mason and Marjorie Crandall.
Larry was fortunate that the G.I. Bill made a provision for his college
education. This scholarship
fund is established so that others
also might be able to continue their
education beyond high school.
One yearly scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a Homer High School
graduate with a financial need, strong academic performance, be involved
in the community, and
exhibit strong character.
Please write a short essay explaining why you should be considered
for this scholarship. Include your views regarding community
service and your
obligations to Homer, also; explain what, and how, you exhibit "strong
character" in your life.
Homer Academic Booster Club Scholarship (est. 2006)
The Homer Community Schools Academic Booster Club was founded in the
fall of 1983 by parents, teachers, and administrators to promote
increased parent and
non-parent involvement in the Homer Community School academic program.
Over the years the ABC members raised award and scholarship funds by
hosting Christmas
tree sales, Dime-a-Dip dinners, and most recently an annual Pasty sale.
The ABCs have sponsored over 20 years of sprig honors desserts to
recognize student achievement
in academics and attendance. The ABCs continue to sponsor the
Student of the Month program and Alumnus of the Year program, as well as
maintain the Academic Hall of Fame.
Each year a scholarship is given to a deserving senior for
post-graduation study.
One yearly scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a Homer High School
graduate based on potential to succeed in a college
curriculum to be pursued. Financial need, character,
and volunteer
involvement will also be considered.

for this scholarship.
Raymond R. Amsler Scholarship (est. 2006)
Established by Raymond R. Amsler. Ray has many fond memories
of this years in Homer and his school time. He established this
scholarship to help Homer students attend college.
A yearly scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a Homer High School
graduate with a potential to succeed in a college curriculum.
Financial need, character, and volunteer involvement
will also be considered.
Please write a short essay about an extra curricular activity you were
involved in at Homer High School and how you benefited from the
experience.
Barton Farm Co. (est. 2006)
Established by Roxanne Barton. Roxanne, her husband Bruce, and
his parent Mike and Kathy Barton want to thank the Homer community for
their support of Barton Farms.
In addition, the Barton's feel very fortunate that they have been able
to employ talented students from the Homer area throughout the years.
Because the Barton's believe strongly
in the importance of education and the continued excellence of our local
schools, this scholarship has been established.
One yearly scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded to a Homer High School
graduate or the surrounding area with a financial need. The
recipient can pursue a vocational degree,
community college degree, or a four-year University College anywhere.
Please write a short essay on a teacher or individual who has profoundly
influenced your life.
Paul & Maurine Sinclair Scholarship & Youth Endowment Fund (est.
2007)
This fund was established by the estate of Maurine Sinclair.
Paul and Maurine Sinclair were both raised in Homer and graduated from
Homer High School. Mr. Sinclair had a career in
banking and Mrs. Sinclair was a kindergarten teacher. Youth were
always important to the Sinclair's. They hosted several foreign
exchange students in their home and Mrs. Sinclair was the
first guardian of the Campfire Girls of Homer.
Grants from the fund may be used for a scholarship for a Homer High
School graduate and/or programs benefiting the youth of Homer. A
$500 scholarship will be awarded to a Homer High
School graduate.

scholarship is important to you.
